The Legion of Mary is a Lay Apostolate dedicated to serving the Church and the community. Established in Dublin, Ireland, by the late Servant of God Frank Duff in 1921, it has formed branches nearly everywhere the Catholic Church is present.
Rather than a specific type of work, the Legion presents a way of life, allowing the laity to not just belong to the church, but actively be the church.
The Legion aims to bring Mary to the world as the infallible means of winning the world to Jesus. Legionary service is performed in union with Mary such that in those served and in fellow legionaries, the Person of our Lord is seen and served by her.
The Legion’s works include a variety of charitable and spiritual activities aimed at serving both the community and the church.
– Contact work in public places and in our individual environments
– Assisting the parish priest in parish projects and programmes
– Promoting spiritual practices and devotions
– Ministry to the sick, handicapped and elderly
The Legion of Mary offers 2 main types of membership, each designed to allow members to contribute meaningfully within their personal capacities.
Active Membership
Active members form the main body of the Legion, attending weekly meetings that bond the apostolate and imparts to members a prudent zeal in the performing of active works assigned.
An active member seeks to live out fully their apostleship, the fullness of Christian life, in the spirit of Mary who is the apostle par excellence.
Auxillary Membership
Auxiliary members form the “prayer arm” of the Legion; they provide spiritual support to the global apostolate through daily prayers of the Tessera.
They are the wings with which “the Legion can soar into the higher air of supernatural ideal and effort”.
