The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is a world-wide Catholic lay organisation founded by Blessed Frederick Osanam. Our patron saint as implied in our name, is St Vincent de Paul. Members try to emulate St Vincent’s spirituality and his love for Christ in the poor.
Here in St Stephen parish, we have about 25 active members serving just over 100 FiNs (Friends in Need) in over 60 families. Most of our FINs are elderly and we try to journey with them as they go through life struggles. In addition to providing cash aid and the occasional rations, we engage them at their homes, in church and at outings we organise for them.
At St Stephen’s, members of SSVP are dedicated to supporting our FINs with compassion and practical assistance. Through monthly cash grants, ration distributions, and tea sessions, they address immediate needs while fostering a sense of community and care. Home visits and hospital or nursing home outreach ensure that no one feels forgotten, while targeted aid like milk and diapers for children or home improvement projects provides tailored support to enhance quality of life. This ministry exemplifies the church’s mission to serve with love, dignity, and hope.
The ministry also goes beyond providing essential support by creating moments of joy and connection for our FINs through three major annual events. The Easter party, outings, and Christmas party are cherished highlights, bringing smiles and a sense of celebration to their lives. These gatherings foster a spirit of togetherness, offering FINs a chance to bond with the community while enjoying meaningful and joyful experiences. Through these events, SSVP members share the love and hope of Christ in tangible, heartwarming ways.
